Skill Development:

A great feature of kayaking is the total flexibility of the paddling experience! There is a paddling style and level to suit everyone. If your goal is to drift with your feet up, or challenge the open waters, your safety is directly affected by your knowledge and ability.

The Paddle Shack has skill development programs for both the experienced and the novice kayaker. We offer learn to paddle programs that will get the beginner in a boat and safely prepared for flat and moving water. Open water and rolling clinics are available to those who wish to expand their skills. Private or group lessons are available. Specific skill development classes are available for seniors, children, and young adults.

Programs offered include:

Guided Trips; Learn basic safety and paddle strokes as you participate in a guided ecotour of the salt marsh, or local historic river tour. This program is designed to introduce those who are new to kayaking to the sport. All safety gear, boat, paddle, and PFD are provided. The pace is relaxed, short talking topics and points of interest along the way insure that everyone keeps up with the group. Trip time 2-3 hours. Cost $45.00

Introduction to Kayaking; What you need to know to safely get started kayaking, and test paddle boats you are interested in...all in one highly instructional class. Start with the basic differences in kayak and paddle design. Proceed to safely enter and exit your kayak, learn proper techniques for forward, reverse, turning and sideward movements of your kayak, learn the value of torso rotation, how to stop yourself from accidentally turning over (the art of bracing).

This short (3+ hour) course will give you the skills to safely and effectively get started kayaking. Fee is $60...all equipment is supplied...kayaks, paddles, pfd's, etc! Once you are comfortable handling a kayak, you are encouraged to test paddle the different style kayaks that we bring to the class. You will leave the class knowing how to handle a kayak, and knowing what features to look for before you buy your own boat.

All class participants will receive the newly published "Recreational Kayaking, The Essential Skills and Safety" by Alex Mathews and Ken Whiting...a $15 value! You’ll learn to choose the right equipment, important issues to understand before you hit the water, the essential strokes and paddling techniques, how to get the most out of your kayak, how to stay safe on the water, and much more.
