Patcong Creek Cleanup & Picnic
Help Make a Difference During National River
Cleanup Week
Who:
Everyone is invited to help clean up Patcong
Creek on Sunday, May 7, 2006. Sponsored by the ACUA Clean Communities
Program in partnership with Paddle Shack, Deepwater Marina, NJ Community
Water Watch, NJDEP Americorp Watershed Ambassadors and the Egg
Harbor Township and Linwood
Environmental Commissions. Individuals, families and organizations are
welcome.
What:
The cleanup is being done during National River Cleanup Week. Patcong Creek
creates the border between Linwood and
Egg
Harbor
Township and flows to the bay of the Great
Egg Harbor River, a federally
designated Scenic and Recreational River. Canoes and kayaks will be used to
pick trash from the water from Central to Ocean Heights Aves. Non boaters
will clean the creek banks from land.
A Community Bar-B-Q will follow at Memorial
Park, Shore Rd. and Devonshire Ave., Linwood. Cleanup supplies and T-shirts
will be provided.
Where:
Patcong Creek from Central Ave to Ocean
Heights Ave in Linwood and Egg Harbor Twp, Atlantic County, NJ. Total
distance approx 2.5 miles. Probably covered by teams cleaning about 1 mile
sectors or less, depending upon number of participants.

Others launch site(s) pending
When:
Clean up will start at 10:30 AM Sunday May 7th 2006, rain or
shine.
Picnic to follow from approx 1 to3 P.M.
How:
Registration is required in order to be
directed to the appropriate staging area. Register by emailing
cromanick@acua.com or calling Casey, Lauren or Michele at 609-272-6950.
Needed:
Besides paddlers and walkers to help pick up trash, Team / Safety Leaders
are needed. Team /Safety Leaders should have paddler rescue abilities and
experience, towing ability, waterproof, portable VHF radio or waterproof
cell phone for communication capability.
Required:
All paddlers must wear PFD’s, be appropriately dressed…the water is still
cold, hypothermia is still a very real risk…especially in the event of
accidental immersion.
Difficulties:
Low tide will be at approximately 12:15P.M. This will make it difficult for
both the shore walkers and paddlers to reach some trash items. None
reachable trash items/locations should be recorded for future cleanup.
Extreme care should be taken when on exposed soft mud, which can act like
quick sand. Tidal currents at this section of the creek are weak but
evident.
