Blue Crab - Patcong Creek is one of the best crabbing locations in South Jersey - but don't let the secret out!

Many years ago, my first paddle up the Patcong Creek was an astonishing confusing mix of exhilaration and disappointment. The tidal marsh grasses harbored an entertaining mix of singing redwing blackbirds and marsh wrens. An osprey snatched an unsuspecting white perch. The banks were occupied by muskrats, geese, ducks, oyster catchers, and various crabs & small aquatic critters. The banks were also home to an unbelievably out of place over-burden of trash.

So at odds with the serene sights of nature were the careless castaways of irresponsible humans. Thankfully more responsible individuals realized that the Patcong Creek inhabitants had little use for old tires, shopping carts, dishwashers, car parts, trash cans, bottles, cans and assorted discards. The annual Patcong Creek Cleanup was born.

Thanks to the efforts of countless volunteers over the years, the Creek is a peaceful and productive natural habitat quietly tucked away in our own back yard. So much so that last year there were two nesting pair of Bald Eagles on the Creek. The parents in the western nest managed to successfully raise & fledge THREE siblings! What a treat for all of us to watch the care, growth and eventual in-flight antics of these youngsters. A testament to the care & tireless devotion of the parents as well as the health of the creek & surrounding habitat.

Join us in helping to maintain this pristine tributary of the Great Egg Harbor River

The 2016 goal is to sweep the entire 6 mile length of the creek from the base of the damn at Central Avenue to the Great Egg Harbor River at Mays Landing-Somers point Road.

You can help by working on foot along the banks or from a boat along the waterway. Trash bags, pincers, gloves and T-shirts will be provided.
