Real Deal Brazil Hat Sale!
News Article

What is the Real Deal?

The Real Deal is made in Brazil of recycled canvas tarpaulins from cargo trucks used for transporting goods. Every hat is truly one of a kind as no two are the same. Each hat has its own unique character. Made from various colors of tarp, these hats may have patches, seams, holes, or even Portuguese writing. These hats are hand sewn by Brazilian villagers and reflect the true craftsmanship of the locals.

Because the tarpaulins were designed to protect its contents from the rough elements in Brazil, they make perfect covers to shield your cabeça (that's head in Portuguese) from the hot summer sun. Every characteristic of The Real Deal tells a story of its prior life lived as a lonely truck tarp and reveals its journeys through the harsh elements in equatorial Brazil. Here are some examples of the characteristics you could find in your own Real Deal Brazil.

Three styles available;

New and Totally Cool
Brisa Ventilated Hat

The new wide-brimmed Real Deal Brazil Brisa (pronounced BREE-suh) looks, at a distance, like the Original. Up close, though, you see the vented sides, two layers of thick burlap stitched in an open mesh style, and firm enough to hold up the crown. The burlap color compliments the canvas-tarp brim, crown and side band.

The hat's burlap fabric is actually reclaimed from old sacks used for carrying dried rice and beans to market in Brazil. But unlike traditional burlap, this stuff isn't scratchy, or itchy. It makes for a pretty comfy hat fit.

Burlap itself is an organic material, though seriously tough stuff, made from such fibrous plants as jute or sisal (the same hardy materials often found in the base of outdoor rugs). We don't know the particular plant fiber, in this case, but what we do know is that you can soak the heck out of this hat, and the burlap sides will, once dried thoroughly, firm back up to the general shape you set while the hat was still wet.

Note that the Brisa Ventilated Hats have no grommets; no sense compromising the integrity of the burlap layers by puncturing them when the hat obviously didn't need the extra venting anyway! That also means that you can't run a strap through the Brisa without some physical modification to the hat itself, so be careful out in the wind, and around water. The Brisa Ventilated Hat doesn't sink quite as fast as the Original, but it will still sink.

For cleaning, hand-wash this hat a little more gently than with the full-canvas Original, going light on whatever mild soap you use, and then rinsing well and allowing the hat to air-dry fully. Again, make sure you give the burlap something to mold around, else it will set back up to look relaxed, not rigid.

The Real Deal Brazil Brisa Ventilated Hat. Because who doesn't at times wanna be a little cooler even than cool?

Original Recycled Tarp Hat

From frays to fading, jagged stitching to ragged holes, patches to ink marks, every one-of-a-kind characteristic of our Real Deal recycled-tarp hat hints at the story of its prior life lived as a lonely truck tarp, and its rough journeys through the harsh elements of equatorial Brazil. Most likely the hat fabric has traveled from the Amazon out to São Paulo and back again. So don't take care of this hat; it will take care of you!

Patches, patches
Patches are a very desirable characteristic of The Real Deal. They truly add uniqueness to each and every hat. Some are small and some are large; some take up complete sections of the hat. They can also appear on the brim or the crown of the hat. Patches can come in a variety of colors and aren't necessarily the same color as the original tarp.

Bend it, Shape it  any way you like it ...
It's All Right

Holes, Fraying and Stitching
Another flair of The Real Deal are the small puncture holes found in some of the hats. They may have been caused by some pointy cargo, or used to secure the tarp to the truck somehow. Fraying may have been caused by repeated wear from its contact with the steel frame of some tired cargo truck.

Portuguese Writing
Some Real Deal Brazil tarp hats have Portuguese writing in various places. Some of it was stamped on the original tarp and some of it is hand written. Lettering is usually large and makes a bold statement. It can appear on the brim of the hat, as well as on the crown.

Tugly Bush Hat

Pretty? Ugly? Neither? Both?

Sun hat? Garden hat? Beach hat? Travel hat? Fishing hat? Do-Any-Dang-Thing Hat?

Any, and all, of the above! This floppy version of our original Real Deal Brazil recycled-tarp head-topper is pretty much whatever you want it to be. Stuff it in a pocket, chuck it in a travel bag, toss it in a corner, step on it, stomp on it, kick it — with no wire in its brim, there's no worries of ever bending this hat out of shape!

As with our better known wide-brimmed original, the Pretty Ugly is handcrafted in rural Brazil from recycled truck tarps, meaning it carries the same distinctive markings, patches, stains, frays and occasional ink marks as our celebrated original.

It's pretty. It's ugly. It's Pretty Ugly. And it's all the Real Deal!
